Clean Water Kit

Clean Water Kit

PUR, the Swiss division of Proctor and Gamble, has created an easy to carry, easy to use water purification kit. The kit, initially developed for use in Third World countries, is useful in applications where you need a large supply of drinking water all at once and boiling the water would be tedious and impractical. The kit consists of two collapsible containers, a stirring tool, a clothe filter, and packets of purification chemical.

The water to be purified is poured into the first container and a chemical is stirred into it. This chemical creates a flocculus that looks something like cotton candy. The flocculus traps impurities in the water and then sinks to the bottom of the container after about ten minutes. The water is then strained into the second container and is ready to drink. The PUR Clean Drinking Water Kit will treat exactly 10 liters of water at a time (no variations on the amount of water are permissible for safe results) and is especially good for water that carries lots of particulate matter, like lake wate

You can’t always carry water with you on a long hike, but it isn’t safe to drink water you find in the wild without treating it first. One of the safest and easiest ways to do this is boiling. While many experts advise bringing water to a full rolling boil for five to ten minutes, that isn’t really necessary in most cases. Raising the temperature of water to anything above 155 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the same temperature required to pasteurize milk, will kill most germs found in melted snow or lake or stream water.

At the highest altitudes water boils at 167 degrees Fahrenheit. Since boiling points decrease as altitude decreases, the easiest way to make sure the water is treated properly before drinking it is to just heat it until it starts to bubble.  An ultralight stove and a collapsible pot are all you need to keep your drinking water safe and potable on your journey.

Coleman F1

Coleman F1

If you love to hike or backpack, you know that every ounce of weight feels like ten ounces after an hour on the trail. The Coleman F1 Ultralight Stove is a compressed canister stove that only weighs 2.7 ounces yet packs a whopping 16,400 BTUs of heat. The flame is adjustable and burns evenly to avoid scorching, a common problem with other canister-type stoves.

The Coleman F1 Ultralight comes with a carrying pouch and a light collapsible cooking pan to keep everything neat in and ready to go in your pack. With a retail price of well under $50, this little stove is a good investment even for people who don’t camp. Having a little stove on had can be a lifesaver during power outages, especially for homes that don’t have an outdoor grill. Experience campers can improve the stability of this already sturdy light stove by investing in a canister support stand, but even without that, the Coleman F1 Ultralight comes highly recommended.
