If you’ve never been to Assateague National Seashore, Maryland’s barrier island that is now a protected national park, you’re in for a special experience. Assateague is known around the world for its population of wild ponies which roam the island at will. The island is one of the few places left in the world where you can still view wild ponies in their natural state, and the island itself is beautiful in its own right.

Oceanside tent, trailer, and RV campsites are available year round, but you must reserve one far in advance—they fill up fast! Campsites from October 16 though April 14 run $16 per night, and include chemical toilets, cold water showers, and drinking water. You will need to bring your own firewood, sunscreen, insect repellent, screen tents for shade and insect protection, and long tent stakes to anchor tents in the sand and wind. Now is not too soon to make your reservation. To reserve at spot before the summer season hits or to get more info, go to www.recreation.gov.
