Swedish Fire Starter Kit
The Swedish Fire Starter Kit is made up of a steel striker and a composite metal rod, both of which are strung together on a lanyard you wear around your neck. The metal rod is composed of an of iron alloy combined with a mixture of cerium and iron. The Fire Steel it portion of the kit comes with a clear protective coating on the metal to prevent corrosion—you will have to scrape this coating off before your first use.
The fire starter produces hot sparks when the attached striker is stroked along the main shaft. The sparks lodge in tinder and start your fire. Cotton balls dabbed with petroleum jelly make good tinder and are lightweight and easy to carry. The Swedish Fire Starter Kit eliminates the need to carry matches and creates a certain peace of mind when camping or hiking. The kit retails for right around $16.00.
