Deep Lake campground located is on top of a mountain overlooking canyons, meadows, mountains and the east side of Deep Lake. Situated just outside Gypsum Colorado in the White River National Forest, the campground is surrounded by spruce and fir trees, and has nice views of the lake and surrounding meadows. Accommodations are primitive, with vault toilets available but no running water or hot showers, and no RV hook-ups or electrical outlets, although RV pull through sites are available. The sites are a long way from civilization or much of anything else, but that is their appeal—the beauty of the surrounding territory is completely unspoiled.
There is no gas for 35 miles, so come fully prepared. The campground has a long history with Ute hunting parties camped on Deep Lake’s shores in the early 1800s. President Teddy Roosevelt used the same shore for his Flat Tops hunting party in 1905. A hotel, built here in 1890 but burned down in 1906, was a resting place for travelers between Dotsero and Meeker. Site rental is $6 per night with a 14-night maximum, and sites are first come first served.
