Marmot Base Layer

Marmot Base Layer

The Marmot lightweight underwear base layer top dries fast, controls odors, and provides UV protection. The UV filtering fabric does not rely on chemicals so the UV protection will not wash out. The Polartec Power Dry fabric has a patented, moisture-wicking component that helps keep skin dry even during heavy sweating. Cocona is derived from discarded coconut shells rendered into activated charcoal which is then reduced, blended and fused into the fabric itself.

Activated charcoal naturally removes odor and particles, much like a water filter. Cocona products actually retain or improve their performance over the life of the shirt. The naturally UV-resistant fabric has a UPF 40 rating that shields skin from ultraviolet rays. Raglan sleeves are non-irritating and seamless comfort at the shoulders, and they also allow freedom of movement. The flatseam construction is soft next to skin. The tag-free neckline is non-irritating. The Marmot base layer shirt retails for just under $40.

Patagonia Capilene Zip Shirt

Patagonia Capilene Zip Shirt

If you’ve never had to work or play in cold weather for any period of time before, you probably haven’t given a single thought to thermal underwear, but if you plan to spend any time camping, you should.  Patagonia makes the best, and in this case it isn’t just about sporting a brand name, it’s about quality. Patagonia’s Capilene line of thermal shirts and longjohns is designed to wick moisture away from the body while keeping warmth in. Extremely lightweight and comfortable, Patagonia Capilene undergarments and shirts are cut generously and are incredibly durable. Wear them as a base layer right next to your skin or over another layer as a casual shirt or top.

Indispensable for hikers and backpackers, Capilene helps to prevent hypothermia by keeping clothing dry even when heavy exertion causes sweat to form under coats and outerwear. This is feature crucial, since once clothing gets wet in a wilderness setting, the danger of hypothermia increases dramatically. Patagonia’s Capilene line isn’t cheap—shirts start at around $29 and go up—but you get what you pay for. Once you’ve tried a few cheap imitations, you’ll gladly shell out whatever is necessary for the real deal.

Patagonia Wool 3

Patagonia Wool 3

Start your layering system with the midweight Patagonia Men’s Wool 3 Long-Sleeve Zip-Neck on cold days. If you’re just going for a brisk evening run, wear it solo, and unzip the neck when you warm up. When the temp drops, slip the Patagonia Wool 3 Zip-Neck under a stretchy softshell for ice climbing, or wear it under a trim hard shell for the slopes in springtime.

Patagonia keeps their already luxe New Zealand merino wool soft by treating it with an eco-wash instead of the chlorine shock treatment other manufacturers use. Wool fights odor naturally, and it insulates even when wet, so you can replace a few of your old stinky synthetic tops with one Wool 3 Zip-Neck.
