“No more warnings, it will now be instant fines “, warned Clive Gedes, the Mayor of Queenstown, located on the South Island of New Zealand, along the picturesque Lake Wakatipu. More than 60 warnings a day are given to thoes new tourists named “Freedom Campers” seen getting back to nature and sleeping in picnic sites, carparks and laybys with no toilet facilities and where it is strickly prohibited.
They seem to have ignored the numerous NO Camping Signs and worst of all they are leaving human waste behind. Freedom camping is banned in the 10km around Queenstown and the signs are pretty clear. Not surprising, the response from all the freedom campers, 3 News approached, claimed to have left anything but footprints. However ask any local resident and they have a very different story.

Many areas are finding that campers from all walks of life are hitting the shores of lakes and the dirt of hiking trails. With the economy doing so poorly, camping has become the vacation option of the year. Some areas are boasting double the bookings for cabins and campground areas over last year’s numbers, as people who have never camped before, or those who have not camped in years, are coming into the wilderness.
Some areas, such as those at Chester Frost, Tennessee, are seeing more visitors than ever. Although rental prices are rising, people are more interested in coming out. There are reports of outdoor equipment sales growing by 26 percent during the first quarter. Overnight camping has seen a growth of 18.5 percent in some areas.

The Children of the Earth Foundation, a non-profit organization established by author and outdoorsman, Tom Brown Jr., has been offering courses in survival, tracking and nature awareness to families, youth and teens since 1999. Operations have taken place from a New Jersey home base but because of the cost of travel, a new branch has been opened in California.
In Children of the Earth programs, children and teens learn ancient skills such as making stone tools, tanning hides, making baskets, pottery, bows and arrows and many other skills. Mixed within all these skills are lessons in respect for the Earth and understanding how the things of the Earth sustain our lives. For more information go to:
