Survival Knife

Survival Knife

When choosing camping supplies, most people think about tents, stoves, sleeping bags, boots, and other gear, and all of that is important and necessary, but what many beginning campers don’t think about is buying a good survival knife. What is a survival knife? A survival knife is a good, strong fixed blade knife that will do just about any task efficiently and cleanly. You’ll want to make sure the knife handle is solid, not hollow, and the tang (the metal part of the knife that forms the blade) goes all the way into the handle. If the tang is just glued into a hollow handle (common on many cheap knives), it will break off the first time you use it in the wild.

A finger guard that extends from the blade in both directions will prevent your hand from slipping down the blade and getting cut and a rough handle will help you to keep a firm grip on the knife. Anyone who has ever used a kitchen knows that a good knife is a priceless tool. When it comes to camping and hiking, the same is true times ten.

Classic Swiss Army Knife

Classic Swiss Army Knife

A Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Knife will set you back around $17.50, but once you own one you’ll never want to be without one again. Despite a few drawbacks, they are indispensable tools to have on hand when camping, hiking, or just living. The knife is lightweight and small and fits easily into a shirt or pants pocket, where it stays until you need it. One small pair of scissors, two sharp knife blades, and a pair of tweezers all fold neatly into the trademark red body.

The knife blades do tend to dull quickly and have to be sharpened frequently for maximum efficiency, but that is probably at least partially due to the fact that once you get used to carrying one of these little knives, you find yourself using it more and more until you can’t really leave your house without it whether you are camping or not. Keep in mind that if you forget you are carrying your Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Knife when you board an airplane, it will indeed be confiscated, unfair as that sounds. So if you want to have one on a long trip, you may have to purchase it when you get there.
