Alvarado campground is located on the side of a mountain amid the fresh scent of fir and spruce in the San Isabel National Forest near Westcliffe, Colorado. The campground winds up the mountain surrounded on all sides by Ponderosa, Aspen, Lodgepole and Gambel oak. Some sites have a spectacular view of the valley below and others have mountain views. The Sangre de Cristo Wilderness is close by, and the camp is a great base for hiking, horseback riding, or ATV sports.

The Alpine Lodge is located right in the campground and offers both a restaurant and lounge—rare feature at a rustic mountain camping area. Firewood is available from the lounge for a fee. Fifty RV and tent camp sites are available for $13 to $16 per day with a 14 day maximum stay. Vault toilets and running water is provided, but there are no hot showers for campers, so even though the Lodge is nearby the camping is fairly primitive. Reservations can be made in advance through www.reserveamerica.com.

Classic Swiss Army Knife

Classic Swiss Army Knife

A Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Knife will set you back around $17.50, but once you own one you’ll never want to be without one again. Despite a few drawbacks, they are indispensable tools to have on hand when camping, hiking, or just living. The knife is lightweight and small and fits easily into a shirt or pants pocket, where it stays until you need it. One small pair of scissors, two sharp knife blades, and a pair of tweezers all fold neatly into the trademark red body.

The knife blades do tend to dull quickly and have to be sharpened frequently for maximum efficiency, but that is probably at least partially due to the fact that once you get used to carrying one of these little knives, you find yourself using it more and more until you can’t really leave your house without it whether you are camping or not. Keep in mind that if you forget you are carrying your Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Knife when you board an airplane, it will indeed be confiscated, unfair as that sounds. So if you want to have one on a long trip, you may have to purchase it when you get there.

Camping is great, inexpensive family fun, but every camper has a new story about funny or just annoying mistakes made on the first outing or two.  Some camping mistakes are so common that it’s worth listing them for the benefit of those just getting started.

Here are a few:

  1. Not making a list and following it—It’s easy to get to the campsite, unpack, and discover you are missing something essential, so make a list and check it twice before leaving the house.
  2. Buying a tent that is too small—two people are going to need a four person tent unless ALL they plan to do in it is sleep.
  3. Not planning you meals—if you don’t take enough food or take the wrong food, you’ll end up spending a fortune on overpriced items at a camp store.
  4. Not bring sufficient clothing—think in layers, and buy some quality layers at a good outfitter store. Don’t’ skimp on socks and footgear either, or you’ll be suffering a lot and soon.
