Yurt

Yurt

Winter camping can be as rugged or as luxurious as you wish to make it. If you lean toward a desire to be comfy, consider renting a yurt for your back country winter adventuring. Yurts are becoming more and more popular due to the comfort they provide and the relatively low expense involved in renting one, combined with the outdoor, tent-like feel.

A yurt is a domed semipermanent structure that is halfway between a cabin and a tent. Yurts can be found everywhere winter sports and camping are popular, from swank ski resorts, to family-oriented national parks, to fairly isolated back country. Most come equipped with cooking stoves, wood stoves, cooking utensils and bunks. You bring your own food, personal items and a sleeping bag. Some yurts even have optional catering available. The result is a camp-like feel with cabin-like comfort at an affordable price. Plus, yurts stay warm! To find a yurt for rent in a back country retreat near you, go to Yurts.com.

Wintercamping.com is a winter camping blog with lots of good information for how to have a safe and fun experience outdoors when the weather turns frightful. Knowing what to take with you at all times is essential. Here are ten items that, according to the writers at Wintercamping.com, you should always have in your fanny pack when enjoying the outdoors in chilly weather:

A map of the area you are visiting, a compass, a flashlight, extra food, rain gear and extra clothes, sunglasses and sunscreen, a first aid kit, a pocket knife and/or a multipurpose tool (like a Swiss Army knife), a fire starter and some matches, and finally, a good supply of water and water purification materials. Assembling all of these items is an expensive task and the items take up little space, are lightweight, and can keep you safe and sound in an emergency until help arrives.

Who goes camping in winter? Answer: Anybody who loves the outdoors! With proper gear and clothing, anyone can have a great time camping in winter. In fact, winter provides lots of perks that campers can’t find in balmier weather. At the top of the list is the fact that winter camping comes with no crowds, no dirt, and most of all, no bugs! With leaves gone from the trees, views are better.  Your drinking water stays nice and cold, and fellow campers don’t smell as bad covered by layers and layers of winter clothing.

You can eat more and you will definitely burn it off just keeping your body warm as you tromp through snowy trails and campsites. Snow provides a kind of cushion under a tent, so the ground is not as hard. You’ll never get cabin fever once you get into winter camping—you know you can enjoy the great outdoors any time you want. Keep in mind that winter camping can be hazardous.  Make sure you come adequately prepared with warm clothes in many layers and proper camping gear. Don’t walk on ice and heed severe weather warnings. Once you’ve properly prepared however, let it snow!
